very true. pointing out specific ways of questioning or just seeing things....
but the original emphasis was on the nature of the circumstances not necessarily whether art is in option or not in general.
Which social contexts provide the scope for artists to work? Is contemporary art an activity that is bound to certain political systems? Can you see contemporary art without the context it emerged of? and then: Isn't contemporary art very much connected to modernity and modernity with colonialism? Or is contemporary art practise something which has no place and no history because....it tends to negate his own origins? What effect has the art market, and in the context of Syria: what effect has the lack of an art market? In what other roles does an artist find himself? With what restraints are you confronted, depending on the specific circumstances?
How can the circumstances be reflected in your practise? an example: Can you see the discussions that we are having here, without the logos on the bottom right of this page?

art is always an option. it cant be seen as a solution but rather as an alternative approach to problems and solutions. (sometimes the same thing). art is often most effective when it oscillates between legibility and illegibilty. meaning that when it is read as art it can only go so far and when it is read as not art-as a social gesture it can also only go so far. but between the two in a new space that only art can create is where its power lies. in raising a question not answering it. and not even asking a specific question. but rather by pointing out that it can be asked in such a way.
