Kaya Behkalam was born in wall-enclosed Berlin on the same day that the last VW Beatle leaves the production hall and Jimmy Carter concludes his speech to the nation with the words: „We are a community, a beloved community, all of us. Our individual fates are linked, our futures intertwined. And if we act in that knowledge and in that spirit, together, as the Bible says, we can move mountains.“ Trained as a magician, wrestler and used-car and carpet dealer in the cities of Bombay, Bristol and Tabriz, he is the author of various books, such as: “The decontextualisation of the cookie”, London 2007, “A spectre haunting Europe: the middle eastern migrant and the German Angst”, Hamburg 2005, “Self-exoticism as the easiest way to wealth and fame”, Tehran/Berlin 2006 and the upcoming “The Secretary for Doubt and Constant Revolution” Amsterdam 2009. Furthermore he owns a factory in Adana, Turkey, that produces video art and installations on demand. Since 2006 he is one of the co-directors of the Reloading Images Immaterial Museum.

Staging Masculinity

When Ashkan and I were in Damascus in March and April this year, we tried to go to a studio photographer every day. We asked them to stage us two in whatever way they liked - the pose, the direction of our view, the choice of the backdrop was totally in their hands. Our aim was to explore the city, using the different photo studios as the grid of our daily journey, and to try capturing the visual language in which the male body is staged.
Personally I am not sure in which direction this might de… Continue

Hi Kaya and Omar, I saw the film about the re - enactments last year somewhere, i can not remeber where i saw it, it was an exhibition probably? but i completely loved it. how different it becomes the perception of reality when staged in purpose in front of a white background. Giving confusing impressions of it is a final performance or something transitory like a casting or rehearsal

Sorry to say that you are not an artist anymore ? sad , painful but true ?

Either you change your statment or we need to take an action against you.

walking down the street, that oh-so-familiar feeling pops up again, giving me, like each time it happens, that exhilarating rush, that unbeatable high....a mischievous smirk forms at the corner of my mouth....i watch the people through my black shades pass by, sit in cafés, smoke, laugh, talk....everyone seems so banal, so out of touch, no one seems to notice me, no one seems to know (but will soon - won't know what hit 'em till it's too late) that i'm....yes...me...that i'm....

ALMOST FAMOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Back soon,

I have checked the article, recognized the photos, still useless with names.

I still see it a documenting effort more than social analysis, i'm more for raising questions about our interpretations about each other, in or own socity and across the world, it's crosslink with Orientalism and westernalism and it's contriduction with the new announced slogans as" equal opportunities" ..

Dear Kaya, Ayham

Thanks for your valuable comments, I'll investigate more about it. Right now
i'm strugling with The Archeology of Knowledge / Michel Foucault, i have
postponed reading it for long time but now it's the time.

Actually i'm still working on the list of questions which will accompany each
photo, there will be two lists: one for the target and one for the viewers,
for example : are you on of off? and the same: is he on or off. more contomporane
questiosn than the questions raised before. still hesitating about religious ,
secterian questions ? or similar , lots of ideas but neede refining.

Thus all comments are very welcome.

Still lots to investigate before start shooting,
