As soon as Kaya asked me to enter the discussion about the Museum of the Occident I sent him an email with my first doubts about it. It mainly concerned the nature of the collection we want to arrange. The displayed collection is usually the joint between a space (traditionally the building) and a set of objects (traditionally archaeological findings, looted or acquired items etc.) chosen among millions according to the ³message² one wants want to transmit.
That means that excavation and museum work independently each other. One can not dig and look for findings with the design of an exhibition in mind: the selection of the findings could be affected (many examples of ancient material culture have been ignored during the excavation because they are not artifacts, not good for the exhibition of a prestigious museum); and at the same time it is not correct to design a space (the museum) only because of the finding of something (see the Pergamon).
So, I was wondering how to proceed in the ³excavation², which almost always aims at reconstructing an historical, human and environmental context of a specific area by mean of ³object² and, where possible, writings. Do we think to ³dig² in the West or in the East? And, are we sure to build a museum of the west, made by westerns but located in the east? We don¹t have in the western countries such experience, I mean an oriental museum made by orientals. From this point of view it is a very non-orientalistic operation even thought it could seems the opposite.
