In September or October 2008, the events of Thinker, Artist, Tourist, Spy took place, with Zaat successfully managing to expose a long-term agent, or, "mole", codenamed "The King". The investigation revealed that "The King", who was actually a senior member of the anti-Control faction "The Lynchians" that had taken over the Service the previous year, had passed an enormous quantity of high-grade intelligence to Syria. The anti-Control faction was discredited. At the end of this case Zaat becomes interim Chief of the Service 'The Circus' to clean up the resultant mess in late November, rebuilding the organisation's headquarters staff in Damascus by use of trusted old-timers like Abu Mouse, Issa and Chantal Sachs.
